Gluten-Free Eating in Staunton
Continuing on with our series of celiac-safe travel guides, we’ve picked a diamond in the rough for celiac eating, Staunton, Va. If you’ve ever been to this small gem of a town, you probably think I’ve lost my mind; there can’t possibly be celiac-safe food in that tiny place. That’s where you’re wrong, however. Staunton has quite the gluten-free restaurant selection hiding within their limits that offer safe accommodations for those with celiac disease. Of course, you can always try your luck with Mexican food or some Asian foods, but these places broadcast the gluten-free options they have and are highly rated as celiac safe.
Gloria’s Pupuseria
This is the safest gluten-free restaurant (tied with Cranberry’s) in Staunton for those with celiac disease. Every item on their menu is gluten-free. There is no food in the entire place containing gluten, making it a dedicated facility. If you have celiac disease, you understand the value of having absolutely no risk of cross-contamination at a restaurant; it’s a rare and treasured find. This restaurant serves Salvadoran food and is located on North Central Avenue.
Cranberry’s Grocery and Eatery
Located near the famous Black Friar’s Shakespeare theatre is a certified gluten-free restaurant. They offer celiac safe gluten-free accommodations for most of their menu options, including gluten-free tortillas for wraps. Their menu makes it very clear which items can be made gluten-free and which can’t, making it easy to navigate. They have a very large menu with a lot of options. Be sure to tell them you have celiac disease when you order.
Mill Street Grill
The Mill Street Grill offers a wide selection of gluten-free options on their menu. They’re incredibly accommodating for those with celiac disease, offering chips and salsa in place of bread for the table and baking potato wedges rather than serving those made in the common fryer. As with every gluten-free restaurant, be sure you inform the server you have celiac disease beforehand.
Snapdragon Pho, Inc.
Unlike many Korean restaurants, Snapdragon focuses primarily on pho. They offer a few other menu items, but not many. However, it is important to know that they do serve a sandwich which obviously contains gluten, so it’s not a dedicated gluten-free restaurant like Gloria’s Pupuseria, but they do have a lot of options and the ability to make accommodations; you should inform them you have celiac disease so that they will take the proper precautions.
Byer’s Street Bistro
This restaurant, in comparison to the other restaurants offering gluten-free in Staunton, has an extremely limited selection. While they do have more gluten-free options for dinner than lunch, if you’re looking for a large selection, this shouldn’t be your choice. However, the food is phenomenal and reasonably priced if you do decide to go. Remember to inform your server of your celiac disease before ordering.
Thai Staunton
Thai Staunton offers an extensive menu that’s pretty standard for Thai places. Be sure to inform them of your celiac disease, as usual, but as long as you stick with rice noodles and avoid soy sauce, you should be good to go. I’ve found most Thai restaurants to be gluten-free restaurants and accommodating for those with celiac disease.
Nisa’s Cafe
Nisa’s Cafe is a great breakfast or lunch stop in Staunton. They offer gluten-free bread for any sandwich for $1.25 up-charge. They also have some gluten-free desserts available that come highly reviewed.
Nu-Beginning Farm
Nu-Beginning Farm offers a huge selection of gluten-free items on their menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They even have gluten-free desserts and bread available. The gluten-free bread is $1.25 up-charge, just like Nisa’s Cafe. This gluten-free restaurant also comes highly rated on Find Me Gluten-Free.
